Crash victim Andrew Tsai graduates with class

In a sea of nearly 1,000 graduates, Andrew Tsai stood out – not only for his academic excellence, but for his courage and strength in the face of adversity.
The Baruch College-bound Francis Lewis High School alumnus might not have been able to attend the ceremony, having been the victim of a domino-effect car crash outside his school on February 27.
Tsai lost part of his right leg and underwent numerous operations. In fact, he was released from Bellevue Hospital just four days before commencement after suffering an infection.
&#8220We’re so happy he can join the graduation and can still go to college,” said Tsai’s aunt, Yu Ki Hu.
During the graduation exercises on June 26, Councilman John Liu commended Tsai’s spirit.
&#8220Not for a moment has Andrew considered himself a victim in any way.
He realizes it’s not about him, but about all the graduates of Francis Lewis High School.”
Principal Jeffrey Scherr presented Tsai – who received a standing ovation – with his diploma and an $11,000 check, representing fund-raising efforts by his fellow students.
Having earned an average of 92, Tsai also received the Matthew Sean Kennedy Memorial Award.
&#8220It’s nice to see him graduate,” said his 17-year-old sister Amber who is due to receive her diploma next year.
&#8220We’re really very happy he’s getting back to his old life,” said mom Tiffany Mao, who flew in from California the day before the ceremony.
Tsai’s father Sam came in from Arizona the very morning of the commencement.
Set to start college in September, Tsai nonetheless has a lot of work ahead of him this summer.
&#8220He will undergo several surgeries,” said Hu. &#8220He knows he has a tough road ahead, but his treatment comes first.”
On his future and his condition, Tsai said, &#8220I feel good. I’m very excited about college.”
Zongling Zhu, 48, of Fresh Meadows, the driver charged with felony assault in the accident, will stand trial next month. If convicted, she faces up to 25 years in prison.
Following the ordeal, the family has retained the services of a lawyer.
