This school year, City Year has 1,000 young adults who are doing their part to make a difference in schools across the country, with 212,500 hours of community service being done in New York.
In New York City, the volunteers, between the ages of 17 and 24, work in schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens performing services such as tutoring, mentoring, and finding ways to improve the local area, among other things. This year, one site where volunteers are working is in Long Island City.
The organization was initially founded in Boston in 1988 as an eight-week program and now has programs throughout the country.
Nicole Tsang, 22, first became exposed to the work of City Year when she was a Resident Assistant at Barnard College, where she recently graduated from, and the organization had a Martin Luther King service day. Now, she is acting as a service leader at P.S. 112 in Long Island City, leading a team of 10 volunteers who provide assistance to the school in various ways.
