Honor Women’s Rights Advocate

Ann Gottlieb, who has been a resident at North Shore Towers in Floral Park for the last two years, was recently honored by Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) with the Margaret Sanger Award.
Gottlieb, who formerly served on PPNC's Board of Directors, helped to ensure that the organization was able to get out into the community more by financing the &#8220Plan Van,” which is a fully-equipped mobile unit that provides services such as educational programming and HIV testing. Recently, during Breast Cancer Month, the van helped educate young women about doing self breast exams.
&#8220I've always been an advocate for women's rights, as was my mother before me and my daughters are now,” Gottlieb said.
Gottlieb attended Ohio State University and received a degree in business administration.
In 1949, Gottlieb and her husband, Jules, founded ABCO Refrigeration Supply Corp. Even after having her first two children, Gottlieb, a mother of four and grandmother of eight, still contributed to the business by working from home.
&#8220He was so proud of me and what I did,” Gottlieb said of her husband, who passed away about seven years ago.
Since 1958, Gottlieb has been a dedicated volunteer with the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. She previously served two terms as the president of the LIJ Service Guild and, since 1976, has been a member of its Board of Trustees. Following the merger between LIJ and North Shore, she has continued to serve on the combined board.
Also among Gottlieb's contributions are founding, along with her husband, the Women's Comprehensive Health Center on Northern Boulevard and the Ann and Jules Gottlieb Foundation.
Along with using the foundation to support North Shore LIJ, Gottlieb has also supported a center for family and domestic violence at the Samuel Field YM-YWHA in Little Neck.
&#8220I try to do what I can do,” said Gottlieb, who is also very involved with the Temple Beth Israel in Port Washington, where she serves on its board. &#8220I've always been an involved person.”
Gottlieb, who lived in Manhasset before moving to North Shore Towers, is active in its activities and said that the staff has made her feel very welcomed.
&#8220I am enjoying my life here at North Shore Towers,” Gottlieb said.
