New Dorm At QC

In an effort to attract the best and the brightest students, Queens College is looking to build a dorm on its Flushing campus.
“We need to remain competitive both within and outside CUNY in attracting the best students,” said Queens College President James Muyskens.
Queens College announced that it is expecting to publish a “Request for Proposals” on February 26. They will be looking for ideas from developers about the design and construction of the dorm building.
The building will be low-rise with four or five stories and will accommodate between 450 and 550 students. The dorm will be located where the outdoor tennis courts on campus currently are. New tennis courts will be built elsewhere on campus.
Queens College is also planning on adding 200 parking spaces.
The project, which is not using any public funds, has an estimated cost of $63 million. Occupancy is targeted for the fall of 2009.
By adding a dorm building, Queens College feels that it will be able to draw more residents from the borough who are “high-achievers” looking for a residential experience.
It will also be able to take in musicians from around the world who want to attend its Aaron Copland School of Music, along with non-local students interested in other areas of study.
Queens College currently has more than 18,000 students. Those living on campus would only represent two percent of the student body and will not be an increase in the student population.
“Queens College will remain a commuter campus, committed to our mission of educating New Yorkers,” Muyskens said.
