NYPD names Muslim Chaplin
Khalid Latif has been appointed Chaplain for the New York Police Department (NYPD).
As the Department’s second Muslim Chaplain, he will serve the needs of the NYPD’s Muslim members.
“It’s only fitting that we make sure we have the best Chaplains available to provide spiritual support and counseling,” said NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly. “Khalid Latif fits that description and is an outstanding addition to the Police Department.”
In his new role, Latif will work closely with Sidique Wai, who oversees the Department’s New Immigrants Outreach Program, and Erhan Yildirim, a Department liaison to the Muslim community.
In addition to Latif, the NYPD’s Chaplain’s Unit has members who serve the Catholic, Jewish and Protestant faiths.
Department Chaplains are on call 24 hours a day. They often respond to the hospital if an officer has been hurt. Additionally, the Chaplains provide counseling on a personal level for any officer in need.
