Klein dedicates science labs

New York City Schools Chancellor Joel Klein visited Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows to help dedicate the new science labs. The labs - four in total with 34 lab stations each - have been open for classes for a year and a half.
“It was a great affirmation of our efforts,” said Francis Lewis Principal Jeffrey Scherr (third from right). “When people like that visit your school, it just affirms all that you’ve been involved in and all we do for children.”
During the visit, Lewis students got the chance to show the top city officials their science skills, and Klein helped to Advanced Placement Biology students (left to right) Sharmeen Uddin, Ani Panoyan, and Amanda Gonsalves, dissect a baby shark.
The state-of-the-art labs, which took about one year to construct, have running water at each station, electronic panels for physics students, hoods for chemistry students, and all new equipment, said science teacher David Marmor, who has worked at the school for the past six years.
Before the addition of the new facilities, the school had two labs, dating back about 50 years. “Labs were run down. Things were rusted,” Marmor said. “It’s a night and day situation.”
