LaGuardia Community College is offering a free six-week job readiness and computer literacy program for displaced homemakers, including those who are separated, divorced, widowed, or single parents, interested in entering the workforce.
Also eligible are those whose spouses are disabled, unemployed, or who have experienced a loss of family income.
Students attending the six-week session will take classes Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Friday from 9 a.m. to noon at the college, located at 31-10 Thomson Avenue in Long Island City. Class begins on Monday, May 21.
Through the college’s Home to Work Center (HWC) for Displaced Homemakers, students will attend job readiness workshops and receive computer and vocational training that will prepare them for sustainable employment.
LaGuardia’s HWC is a full-service career facility that offers free services for qualified persons. The host of services ranges from job readiness skills and vocational training to specialized workshops and seminars on such topics as financial literacy and time management.
HWC offers courses in computer literacy, a variety of allied health fields, food services, certified nurse aid, hospitality, pharmacy technician, sales and customer service.
For those who need to develop English language skills, the center has vocational skills training programs that couple English language instruction with skills training.
HWC also offers individual and group career counseling, support services and referrals. The center provides job search support and job placement services in conjunction with the college’s Workforce1 Career Center.
