Padavan pushes for double tax rebate for seniors

A recently introduced bill in the Senate could potentially double the property tax rebate that senior citizens receive if passed.
“Our proposed increase for seniors would more than double the new rebate slated to go out this year to New York City seniors from $95 to $194,” said Senator Frank Padavan. “I know how much of a strain property taxes put on families, but that strain is especially hard on seniors, many of whom are living on a fixed income.”
It is estimated that about $200 million would be returned to senior citizens. The increased rebates are due to the State having higher revenues than were projected for the 2006 to 2007 fiscal year.
Initially, through its budget proposal, the Senate was seeking to get trebled checks for all homeowners. During negotiations, that changed and the budget instead included $1.3 billion for property tax rebates. However, it doubled the check size only for average homeowners and not for senior citizens.
