Romano and Costello raise $15M for Schneider expansion

Comedian Ray Romano and musician Elvis Costello were part of a May 1 concert that raised $15 million for the Schneider Children’s Hospital Expansion Project.
In total, the expansion project for Schneider Children’s Hospital is expected to cost $110 million. As part of it, there will be a new 100,000-square-foot building. Along with having 75 medical/surgical beds, there will be a stand-alone pediatric emergency department, the first of its kind in the New York region, and a pediatric intensive care unit and imaging center.
Following the money being raised at the recent concert, which was held at Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan and attended by about 1,000 people, and a major gift from the Blumenfeld family, it is anticipated that construction will begin in the fall.
In June, the hospital will also start a second expansion project of a 5,900-square-foot addition to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that will add 24 beds for newborns who are considered high-risk. There will also be a 20,000-square foot glass atrium that will be four stories high. It will have a playground, stage, winter garden and areas for pet, music and art therapy. The cost of it will be $22 million.
During the event, which was hosted by the North Shore-LIJ Health System (NSHS) Foundation and Children’s Medical Fund of New York, Dr. Philip Lanzkowsky, the executive director and chief-of-staff at Schneider Children’s Hospital, was presented with a lifetime achievement award.
