Showing off their dance talent

Students at the Lexington School for the Deaf in Jackson Heights showed off their talents to an audience of more than 430 people during a recent performance of “Breakin’ Thru 2.”
Following seven weeks of rehearsals, the students performed the show at the Ricky and Ralph Lauren Center for the Performing Arts at the Lexington School. The nine participating seventh and eighth grade students received guidance from professional hip-hop dancers, including Kwikstep and Rockafella.
“Breakin’ Thru 2” combined film, African dance, drumming and dancing. During the performance, a sign language interpreter was on-stage and open captioning was shown on plasma screens.
“Our students benefit from participation in these productions in so many ways,” said Dr. Regina Carroll, the school’s superintendent. “They not only develop new skills and become familiar with a broader range of performing art forms, but they also learn how to express themselves in a different way and they develop a sense of pride and confidence in themselves that can have a positive effect on every aspect of their lives.”
The school serves infants up through students who are 21 years of age. The school has a student population of 350. They range from being deaf to hard-of-hearing.
The Lexington School for the Deaf “strives to be a leading educational, advocacy and social service agency on behalf of deaf and hard of hearing individuals.”
