Maple Grove Cemetery will pay tribute to loved ones during the Annual Day of Remembrance and Lantern Festival on Thursday, September 20.
During the ceremony, participants will be able to write messages on wooden lantern shades. The lanterns will then be released at dusk into the lake.
The ceremony is based on an ancient Buddhist ritual. During such rituals, “lanterns representing the souls of the dead are floated out to sea and prayers are offered so that they may rest in peace.”
The goal of the Annual Day of Remembrance and Lantern Festival is “honoring those who have gone before us because no one should be forgotten.”
The ceremony will take place from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 20.
Maple Grove Cemetery is located at 83-15 Kew Gardens Road in Kew Gardens. Attendees should enter the cemetery at Kew Gardens Road at Lefferts Boulevard.
People attending the Annual Day of Remembrance and Lantern Festival should bring a flashlight with them to help see as they leave the cemetery.
