McClancy Benefit

Singer songwriter Ronnie Turso will perform on Saturday, October 20 at Monsignor McClancy High School in East Elmhurst to raise money for the McClancy September 11 Scholarship Fund. Tickets to the concert, scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m., cost $25 per person.
All proceeds will go to the scholarship fund, said Turso’s wife, Valerie Tourso, explaining that all performers are volunteers and food is donated by local businesses.
Currently, organizers are trying to raise enough money for the fund so that it can exist off interest generated each year, and afterward they hope to award a McClancy graduate with money for college each year. Originally, the fund was intended to serve family members of McClancy graduates killed on 9/11, but most of the families moved out of the western Queens area. Therefore, organizers opted to include McClancy graduates headed for post-secondary education.
“We are trying to raise money so that eight men’s memories won’t be forgotten,” Tourso said, referring to eight McClancy graduates - Herman Broghammer, Fire Captain Walter Hynes, Brendan McCabe, Fire Captain Thomas Farino, Firefighter Vincent Morello, Marcellus Matricciano, Firefighter Edward White, and James Cartier - who were killed during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
During the benefit concert at McClancy High School, located at 71-06 31st Avenue, several other entertainers, including the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) Pipes and Drums band, are expected to perform. Free parking in the school’s parking lot and complimentary food and beverages will be available, and a number of prizes will be raffled off.
