Saint Kevin School in Flushing will soon have a new mural decorating its outdoor recess area thanks to a grant from the Airborne Teacher Trust Fund (ATTF).
Art teacher Sheila Ambrosio received a call for entries from Airborne last summer and decided to apply for it. In November, she found out that she had been selected to receive an $800 grant.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Ambrosio said. She continued, “Without it, we wouldn’t have been able to do something like that. It’s going to pay for all of the supplies.”
The grants given out by Airborne are “designed to help elementary and middle school teachers implement art and music programs in their schools.” Ambrosio was one of 57 recipients to receive a grant for the most recent quarter. A total of 711 applications were received.
“With budgets becoming tighter each year, schools are faced with the difficult decision of having to cut vital programs,” said Airborne Health Formula creator Victoria Knight McDowell. “The Airborne Teacher Trust Fund is meant to fill the gap and keep our youth engaged and inspired, so they can live full and rewarding lives.”
Ambrosio said she came up with the idea for the mural because she thought it would be a fun project for the students and would be a good tool for teaching them art history. The 50 eighth-grade students at Saint Kevin who will be involved with the project have already been coming up with ideas for it and creating sketches.
