Spring ahead time

With Daylight Saving Time occurring on Sunday, March 9, there will be an extra hour of sunlight to enjoy in the evenings as clocks are moved ahead an hour.
According to the website www.webexhibits.org, which is a web-based museum project through the Institute for Dynamic Educational Advancement, Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea of Daylight Savings Time and wrote about it in a 1784 essay.
“The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time…is to make better use of daylight,” the website states. “We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.”
Daylight Saving Time officially began being used in the United States on March 19, 1918 after the passing of “An Act to preserve daylight and provide standard time for the United States,” according to www.webexhibits.org.
When Daylight Saving Time goes into effect this Sunday, clocks will be moved ahead to 3 a.m. at 2 a.m.
As people throughout the city change the time on their clocks, the New York City Fire Department reminds people through its “Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries” campaign that it is also a good time to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
