Heart surgeon Dr. Alan Hartman of North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) and the LIJ Medical Center has been ranked by New York State has having surgical outcomes that are significantly better than the statewide average.
Hartman is the chairman of cardiovascular and thoracic surgery at NSUH and LIJ Medical Center. The recently released report by the New York State Department of Health examined the coronary artery bypass surgeries and value surgeries performed by 150 surgeons throughout the state from 2003 to 2005. During that time, 750 surgeries were performed by Hartman.
While examining the mortality rates, adjustments are made based on risk.
For his surgery outcomes, Hartman was given a double-star rating because of having outcomes that were statistically better than the average.
On Long Island, only two cardiac surgeons received such a rating. Only six in statewide did.
“High survival rates for cardiac surgery at both NSUH and LIJ are due not only to the surgeon’s skill but also achieved because of the comprehensive team approach used at both hospitals to care for cardiac patients,” Hartman said.
“Patient care is coordinated before and during surgery and through the recovery period with support programs to guide the entire process. In addition, through daily morning reports, the team communicates the significant issues and plans for each and every patient, every day, including weekends and holidays,” Hartman said.
