Prepare for a blackout

Councilmember Eric Gioia spoke at the Woodside Senior Center in Queens about what to do in case of a blackout. As the city struggled through its spring heat wave, Con Ed experienced pockets of power failures and subway delays.
“Con Ed still hasn’t assured us that the blackout disaster that affected Queens two summers ago will not be repeated,” said Gioia. “This company has a long way to go before anyone in the city feels comfortable relying on them and I am urging New Yorkers not to take any chances.”
In case you are left without electricity for several days, Gioia says to be prepared for the worst and have the following items available: water; food (3-day supply of non-perishables); battery-powered radio and flashlight and extra batteries; first aid kit; whistle to signal for help; prescription medications and glasses; infant formula and diapers; pet food and extra water for your pet; cash or traveler’s checks and change; fire extinguisher; matches; candles and a non-cordless home phone.
