The body of what police believe to be the 16-year-old girl presumed to have drowned off Rockaway Beach was found on Wednesday, July 23, five days after the incident.
Tiara Coaxum, 16, most likely jumped into the water to rescue her struggling friend, Carla Armaza, also 16, the victim’s mother, Tikhia Williams, said in published reports.
Lifeguards spotted the girls in the water around 3 p.m. on Friday, July 18, but they were only able to rescue Armaza, who is unhurt.
The rescue search was called off on Saturday evening, July 19.
It is not clear yet how the girls got in the water, at Beach 116th Street.
The mother said she accepted that her daughter, a student at Long Island City High School, was missing only when she went to the beach herself, according to published reports.
