The John F. Kennedy Regular Democratic Club of Queens (JFK Club) honored graduating students from seven local high schools for their commitment to education and the community with their Charles P. Zaragoza Community Service Award and a $100 check.
The award was created this year in memory of Charles P. Zaragoza, who was a 20-year member of the club, President of the St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish Council and advocated for the homeless and newcomers to this country.
The winners of the JFK Club’s 2008 Zaragoza Community Service Award are as follows: Dominique Burrus, Poiema Willett, Andrew Shamsheer, Gralat Xue, Dimitra Mpounas, Angela Farooqi and Jolene Ramsaran.
College office counselors Cathy Reynolds of Jamaica High School, Robert Boykin of Richmond Hill High School, Martina Grant of Forest Hills High School, Barbara Gong of John Bowne High School, Christine Gerstner of Robert F. Kennedy High School, Lisa Carney of Hillcrest High School and Kelly Miller of Gateway High School chose the recipients of this award.
“I have not seen nor heard such enthusiasm for education and helping out the community, and we look forward to a tradition of the JFK Club presenting the Zaragoza Community Service Award,” said JFK Club President Herb Ryan.
