Go on a ‘staycation’

By Frederick R. Bedell Jr., Glen Oaks Village

This time of the year, we are on vacation or are contemplating where to go. I could not afford to go anywhere, so like many others, the question is what to do.

The increase in gas and the high costs of goods and services have become a quandary for most of us. I have opted to have a “staycation,” as opposed to a vacation. But you really have to do something, and I have found many different things to do in my community this week while on my staycation.

I have taken my bicycle out and traveled around Glen Oaks Village, Bellerose, Floral Park, Douglaston and Little Neck. I had found this to be good exercise and a way to see parts of Queens that I may not have seen before. I also rediscovered city parks — particularly Alley Pond Park — and found it refreshing to commune with nature.

It rained one day, but I did not let that dampen my spirits. I renewed my Queens Library card in Glen Oaks Village and found the library has so much to offer.

There is so much to do in Queens, like shopping, eating, hiking. biking, running and walking in parks, that you do not have to leave it to have a good staycation. If you want real fun, go to the Bayside Marina, where many activities take place.

Finally, check the newspaper. It has a section about where to go and what to do.

Have a happy staycation.
