Pocket disaster guides on sale

September is National Preparedness Month, and Informed Publishing, the nation’s leading publisher of critical planning and response tools, is drawing attention to two of its guidebooks, encouraging Americans to take the first simple step to prepare for emergencies in their home and communities.

A 2007 Red Cross survey found that 93 percent of Americans are not prepared for a calamity. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FWMA), the U.S. has only one firefighter for every 280 people and one police officer for every 385 people.
That means that in an emergency most people “are going to be on their own for possibly 48 to 72 hours,” said FEMA spokesperson David Paulison.
“During an emergency you can’t guess,” Barnes said, “Our guides give you what you need to know in one concise package.”
The Home Emergency Pocket Guide takes an all-hazards approach, organized by event type, with tabbed and color-coded sections, with before-during-after guidelines for home preparation, first aid and survival tactics for storms, fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and homeland terror attacks.
It is spiral-bound and printed on high-quality plastic, making it waterproof, tear-resistant and alcohol-fast.
As a companion reference, the Pet Emergency Pocket Guide will be released in September, with current information on emergency planning and care for pets. It shows how to plan for sheltering (since many shelters do not accept pets,) how to create a pet emergency kit and other resources.
