Preparing for senior boom

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) and several other groups and organizations are holding a conference soon on coming needs of the baby boomers and the growing number of senior citizens in New York.
Entitled “Empowering Communities for Successful Aging,” the conference will be held upstate at the Saratoga Hilton and Conference Center in Saratoga Springs, NY on Wednesday and Thursday, November 12 and 13.
With the number of baby boomers due to increase by over 1 million in 2020 to 4.3 million, the state will have to make some drastic changes to accommodate all their needs.
By this time also, one-forth of New York’s population will be 60 years of age or older.
Several conflicts and tasks that New York faces in the next decade will be tackled by national and state experts in a series of 50 workshops.
These workshops will cover such topics as affordable housing, and housing renovation and redevelopment, personal safety, management of funds, tending to emotional needs and wants, and health-related issues to name some.
The goal of this conference is to promote change through local action with help from community groups, faith-based organizations and non-profits.
Along with this, providing the necessary information and resources to help bring all these groups to work together to serve these baby boomers in every way possible is also one of the main objectives.
