A webcam gave one United States Air Force Captain a very special gift - the chance to see his first child born at North Shore-LIJ even tough he is station in Southwest Asia.
On December 21, Gannon Schaefer gave birth to son Jackson. Although her husband, U.S. Air Force Captain Mike Schaefer, wasn’t able to physically be in the delivery room, he was still present after members of the health system’s Information Services team were able to place a webcam in the delivery room.
“There are no words to describe how happy I am that my husband could be with me for the birth of our son,” Gannon Schaefer said. “We just want to thank the entire North Shore-LIJ family for taking us into their hearts and making the birth of our son such a special and unforgettable experience.”
Captain Mike Schaefer was survived the Pentagon terrorist attacked on 9/11. It is anticipated that he will return to the United States from Southwest Asia in 2009.
“It [watching the birth via webcam] just goes to prove that holiday miracles can come true,” he said.
Along with being able to be together during the birth via webcam, the Schaefers were also able to see each using the webcam before and after the birth.
