“In Between Days” Screening at the Museum of the Moving Image

Filmmaker So Yong Kim will be in Queens Friday, January 23 to participate in a discussion following the screening of “In Between Days” as part of the Museum of the Moving Image’s World Cinema Showcase series.
Born in South Korea, Kim moved to Los Angeles when she was 12 and now resides in Brooklyn. It was her time growing up in L.A. that provided the inspiration for her 2007 debut feature film “In Between Days.” She directed it and wrote the script.
Initially, the script for the film followed the main character, Aimie, for 30 years. Eventually it was changed to instead focus on the girl’s teenage years, which Kim said “leave a strong impact on everybody.”
In the film, which was co-written and produced by Kim’s husband Bradley Rust Gray, Aimie is a recent South Korean immigrant adjusting to her new surroundings. She is in love with her best friend, Tran, but has a difficult time talking about her feelings with him.
Kim drew on some of her own experiences growing up, which included not talking about love or sex in her household and there being “a persistent tension when it came to the topics of sex and love” while with her friends.
“My intention in making ‘In Between Days’ is to share an immigrant story that is personal and honest,’ Kim wrote in her statement about the film.
The film made its premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival and won a Special Jury Prize. Both Kim’s family and Gray’s family were present at the festival and were on hand to hear that “In Between Days” was selected for the award. Kim said it was great to be able to share it with their families and that she is grateful for the entire Sundance experience.
Kim said that she went into the making film with no expectations and was “shocked” that so many people went to see it and liked it.
“I just feel really lucky that I got a chance to make the film,” Kim said.
Last year, Kim premiered her latest film “Treeless Mountain.” She has also been assisting her husband with his film “The Exploding Girl,” which will soon be premiered in Berlin.
The Museum of the Moving Image and the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center will present the screening of “In Between Days” at 7 p.m. on Friday, January 23. The monthly World Cinema Showcase “reflects the vitality of contemporary global cinema.”
Following the screening, Kim will participate in a discussion with David Schwartz, the Chief Curator of the Museum of the Moving Image.
“I think Queens will be so great because it has a diverse ethnic mixture,” Kim said. “It will be really great to see what the audience will think…”
The screening and discussion will be held at the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center, which is located at 31-10 Thomson Avenue in Long Island City. There is no charge for museum members, who can RSVP by calling 718-777-6810.
The cost for CUNY students is $8 and $10 for non-members. To purchase tickets, visit www.laguardiaperformingarts.org or call 718-482.5151.
