A Sanitation official from Floral Park received the highest honor that can be given to a city worker after he was one of seven employees honored with a Sloan Public Service Award, which recognizes excellence in city government.
Walter Czwartacky, who works for the Sanitation’s Long Term Export Bureau, was given the award at a March 11 ceremony hosted by Mayor Michael Bloomberg at the Great Hall at The Cooper Union school in Manhattan.
Czwartacky and his Sanitation colleague, Harry Szarpanski, were recognized for coming up with the city’s 20−year comprehensive solid waste management plan.
“The technology of waste disposal is relatively easy, but the social and political dimensions — the how and the where — are the real planning challenges,” Czwartacky said in a statement. “It has been an interesting journey to get to his point. I’m excited to see the pieces starting to fall into place, even if we haven’t been able to implement everything we would have wanted to, or when we wanted to.”
Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty said Czwartacky’s solid waste management plan “provides a viable system of effectively managing our trash through proven methods of waste reduction, reuse and recycling.”
