Major renovation set for Queens Plaza

Bicyclists participating in the 2008 Five Boro Bike Tour enter Queens Plaza from the Queensboro Bridge. Work on upgrading the plaza has been accelerated by $37 million in federal stimulus funding.

The congested, pothole−wracked streets along Queens Plaza will get a major upgrade over the next two years with the help of more than $37 million in federal stimulus funds, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Monday.

The two−phase project is expected to cost a total of $135 million and will include the construction of new sidewalks and landscaping along Queens Plaza North and Queens Plaza South between Jackson Avenue and Vernon Boulevard and the continuation of a bikeway between 21st and 23rd streets.

The Queens Plaza improvements are the largest stimulus−funded project of nine in the borough, including roadwork in College Point, Jackson Heights and the repair of the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge over Newtown Creek.
