Major renovation set for Queens Plaza

The congested, pothole−wracked streets along Queens Plaza will get a major upgrade over the next two years with the help of more than $37 million in federal stimulus funds, Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Monday.

The two−phase project is expected to cost a total of $135 million and will include the construction of new sidewalks and landscaping along Queens Plaza North and Queens Plaza South between Jackson Avenue and Vernon Boulevard and the continuation of a bikeway between 21st and 23rd streets.

The Queens Plaza improvements are the largest stimulus−funded project of nine in the borough, including roadwork in College Point, Jackson Heights and the repair of the Greenpoint Avenue Bridge over Newtown Creek.
