Another year has gone by and it is time to contemplate taking a vacation. Like many others, I have chosen for the second year in a row to take a “staycation.” This is because our economy has not improved much, with gas going up again and the higher costs of goods and services.
What many people do not realize is that you do not have to spend a lot of money to enjoy yourself. For instance, my wife and I went to the Douglaston Movie World to see “Star Trek.” I found bike riding a good means of exercise, as I travel through Glen Oaks Village, Floral Park, Bellerose, Douglaston, Little Neck and Queens Village. With the wind at my back and plenty of sunshine, I could not beat that — plus, the price was right.
After that, we rediscovered our city parks, particularly Alley Pond Park, and found it refreshing to commune with nature. For real fun, we found the area around the Bayside Marina where you can run, bike, walk and roller blade. You can also enjoy some fishing or just be near the water and watch the boats on the bay.
If you are looking for excitement, check out your local library, where you will find many interesting books that can take you to many exciting places and introduce you to many interesting characters.
