Bloomberg thanks hero camp counselor

Nearly two weeks after Queens teen Rachel Guzy saved nine pre-teen campers on a bus that was careening out of control, the Astoria resident received a personal congratulations from Mayor Michael Bloomberg for her heroic actions.

Guzy traveled to City Hall on Friday, September 4 and received a certificate as well as a Golden Apple donated by Tiffany and Co.

“I wasn’t thinking about myself, I was thinking, ‘How are these kids going to get home,’” said the quick-thinking teen.

On Tuesday, August 18, Guzy slammed on the brake pedal of the bus as the driver, who minutes before began feeling sick, fell out of the bus and onto the street where he was later pronounced dead.

The young passengers, who were all terrified at the time, did not suffer serious injuries and were grateful to Guzy for saving their lives.
