It’s a trifecta of extraordinarily gifted female athletes from Bayside High School.
Seniors Alice Choi, Ha Rin Lee and Alaine Tate were honored this week with the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) Wingate Award, given to senior student athletes for outstanding achievement.
Girls’ golf coach Andrew Cogliati said that Choi and Lee carried the Bayside golf team through the playoffs, capturing the school’s first-ever championship in the sport. For him, watching these two budding golf stars cap their high school careers in championship fashion was immensely satisfying.
“Their work ethic exemplifies what being a student athlete is all about and the opportunities available if you work hard enough,” said Cogliati. “Not only did they work on their own game, they were willing to help teammates become better players.”
Choi and Lee will also receive scholarships to Georgetown and St. John’s University, respectively.
Alaine Tate has been running with the Bayside track program since her freshman year – and this year finished first at the Mayor’s Cup, third at the City XC Championships and qualified for the New York State Federation Championships for the second year in a row.
Michael Boccuzza, her coach, said that Tate improved year after year and showed unprecedented leadership and dedication to her team this season. He was impressed by her work ethic and dedication not only to herself, but to the team.
“Alaine is a captain that leads by example,” said her coach, Michael Boccuzza. “Her success has taken the Bayside track program to new levels and she will be greatly missed next year.”
Coaches and sports’ coordinators nominate athletes for the PSAL Wingate Award and a committee of PSAL staff reviews the nominees the candidates and chooses the most accomplished student-athlete in each sport.
An awards ceremony honoring the winners will be held at the end of the school year.
