Source: Helen Sears will not run in Special Election

Sears is out!

The Queens Courier has learned that former City Councilmember Helen Sears will not challenge Assemblymember Jose Peralta and former State Senator Hiram Monserrate in the March 16 Special Election for Senate District 13.

A Republican source confirmed that Sears will not accept the Republican nomination, which she would have had to do by midnight, Tuesday, February 22

For the last few days, Sears, a Democrat, had been talked about as running on both the Republican and Independence ballot lines. However, although she received the Republican nomination, the Independence party declined to give her its ballot line – something that appears to have deterred Sears from running in March, according to the source.

The Republicans were poised to give Sears their ballot line in the March Special Election in hopes that Sears could defeat Monserrate and Peralta. If elected she would be a candidate to sit with the Senate Republicans – deadlocking the State Senate at 31-31.
