Looking for a way to volunteer and be around animals? Then the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Queens Zoo could be the answer.
The zoo, located at 53-51 111th Street in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, is currently looking for volunteers for its education department.
Volunteers will assist in a variety of ways, including talking about the animals at their exhibit sites to educate the zoo’s visitors and giving guided group tours. Other possible responsibilities include narrating sea lion feedings and assisting the zoo’s instructors during special program presentations.
In addition, volunteers are able to be a part of seasonal programs that take place at the Queens Zoo. This includes “Boo at the Zoo” and “Presents to the Animals.”
“Volunteers help us to connect people to the wildlife we feature here at the Queens Zoo,” said Queens Zoo Director Dr. Scott Silver. “Whether it is leading a group of children around the zoo, or explaining the different types of feathers found on one of our biofact tables, volunteers help us to educate and excite the public about wildlife in our world.”
To be a volunteer, individuals must be at least 18 years old and able to volunteer a minimum of four hours every other week. They will have to participate in a multi-week training program, the next of which will begin on April 1.
Volunteer applications are available on the Queens Zoo’s web site, www.queenszoo.com. Anyone seeking further information can contact the zoo’s volunteer coordinator by calling 718-721-7361.
