It had been a while since I visited old friend Matty at the White House in Whitestone. They have weathered many storms in their decades-old business and I can report that they still serve generous portions of delicious food and friendly, professional service.

The large space is separated into an ample bar, a back room, a wonderful niche with a huge mural of the Manhattan skyline and rooms full of memorabilia relating to our presidents and the real White House. I had to laugh because as I entered the restaurant there were portraits of Senator Frank Padavan above those of Tony Avella. I wonder if that was a political statement or left over from when they were both in office. Now they are in a battle for the Senate seat that Padavan has held for more than 30 years. The placement of the pictures sets a tone for the restaurant that speaks volumes about combining politics with wonderful food.

The all-American menu, appropriate to its name, held many of our favorites. The perfectly-cooked, plentiful pork chops were served with luscious mashed potatoes and several choices of vegetables. I was in the mood for a roasted chicken and potato skins, a request easily accommodated by the kitchen. Of course, there are many choices on the large menu and if you are an early bird, ridiculously reasonable prices. But for what you get the meal is amazingly reasonable.

Of course, no meal is complete without dessert and we never fail to look at the choices, which are many. We chose a decadent, delicious dark chocolate cake and when they offered cheesecake as well, I asked if it came from the famous Whitestone cheesecake maker – and my favorite – Cascon bakery. It did and we were not disappointed – every forkful was better than the last.

The White House is an old favorite that has become new again. Try it, you’ll enjoy every bite, and like me, want to come back for more.
