Bayside Times to offer free issues
By Rebecca Henely

From now on every resident in Bayside and the surrounding neighborhoods will be getting the TimesLedger Newspapers’ flagship paper for free.

James Spielman, vice president of marketing and operations for the Community Newspaper Group — of which TimesLedger Newspapers is a part — said that starting Oct. 28, the TimesLedger will start delivering free copies of the Bayside Times to virtually every resident in the Bayside Times coverage area. This means homeowners in Bayside, Bay Terrace, Oakland Gardens and Windsor Park will receive the paper at no charge.

“The new saturation program will ensure our award-winning paper with the best coverage of the Bayside community will be distributed directly to the doorstep of virtually every household on a weekly basis,” Spielman said.

At the same time the TimesLedger will stop selling copies of the Bayside Times and the other 11 papers in the chain for 75 cents each at newsstands.

Spielman said, “The decision was made to eliminate newsstand distribution to focus on mail distribution and the papers’ new saturation program. The vast majority of our readers receive the papers through mail subscriptions.”

As part of the move, none of the TimesLedger papers will be sold at newsstands across the borough, although paid subscribers will continue to get their papers, Spielman said. Readers in other neighborhoods may soon start receiving their papers for free as well.

“We’re coming to the readers,” said Les Goodstein, senior vice president of News Corp., which owns TimesLedger. “We realize we have to come right to them.”
