Pisces 1 in New Hyde Park is not situated near an ocean – but the dockside experience is evident in this 33 year neighborhood mainstay. Under the same ownership since it first opened, Pisces 1 provides fresh fish at manageable prices in a soothing, classic setting.
There’s no better way to start a meal than with a cool and crisp salad. The Greek salad at Pisces 1 is perfectly acidic and is served with blocks of feta cheese, instead of the obligatory crumbled variety. The blocks of feta are texturally satisfying – not to mention creamy and fresh. And if you ask, owner Dino Konto might just add some fresh shrimp to your salad.
Konto gets his fish and seafood fresh on a daily basis – he has his own, trusted fishmongers who reel in the choicest catches for Pisces 1.
This is evident early in the meal during the appetizers. The clams on the half shell – of the cherry stone and little neck varieties – taste fresh and clean with the perfect hint of ocean. They also offer a grilled octopus, fried calamari, Maryland crab cakes and baked clams.
For an entrée, there are plenty of pasta options – like linguini with clam sauce, chicken and broccoli penne and chicken parmigiana – but at Pisces 1, seafood is the obvious choice and for good reason.
Pisces 1 offers both whole and filet fish, but the whole branzini – a Mediterranean sea bass – swims tail and fins above the rest. The fish comes out of the oven with perfectly textured skin – crisp and full of flavor – with light and flakey flesh.
Additional fish options include Boston scrod, Norwegian salmon, flounder, and rainbow trout, among others. Pisces 1 also offers live Maine lobster, various shrimp dishes and a classic fish and chips dish. Land lovers have plenty of options as well, with prime steak cuts, chicken dishes and lamb chops.
It doesn’t end there, as one cannot leave Pisces 1 without indulging in their to-die-for desserts. Each dessert, except for the ice cream, is homemade by their in-house baker, Barbara. Among the many pies, the key lime stands out the most. This all-natural sweet provides the key lime flavor without colorings or additives.
