The U.S. Department of Homeland Security extended the designation of temporary protected status for Haitians who came to the United States following last year’s devastating earthquake for another 18 months.
The agency also is giving Haitians more time to apply for temporary protected status, which delays their deportation.
“I commend [Homeland Security] Secretary [Janet] Napolitano for having the good sense to realize the importance of extending temporary protected status for Haitians living in the United States. Given the current state of Haiti more than a year after their devastating earthquake, any removal of Haitian immigrants from the United States would have had crippling consequences and would have undermined the recovery efforts of the country,” City Councilman Danny Dromm (D-Jackson Heights) said in a statement. “Extending this protection was morally the right thing to do.”
