Recycling Asphalt– City Councilmember James F. Gennaro introduced legislation mandating that city agencies use asphalt that incorporates at least 20 percent recycled material by 2012, with the percentages increasing every few years.

“We all know the historic streets of New York need a little refurbishing every once in a while and using readily-available recycled material just makes sense,” said Gennaro.

Every year, 5 percent of city streets are resurfaced by removing about one million tons of asphalt and reapplying another million, according to Gennaro. This will reduce the city’s waste and carbon emissions.

Sickle Cell Advocacy– Queens Sickle Cell Advocacy Network, Inc. has partnered with Be Sickle Smart to present critical information for those with sickle cell disease and offer free screenings for iron overload, which can be a life-threatening condition.

The Be Sickle Smart Empowerment Day will be held at the Crowne Plaza in Times Square at 1605 Broadway from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m on June 18.

A team of doctors will speak on emergency room procedures, going from pediatric care to adult internal medicine and the risks of iron overload because of blood transfusions.

Medical expert Dr. Ian will also be at the event, talking with patients and caregivers about the challenges facing the sickle cell community and encouraging them to embrace a successful life despite the hardships.

Parents are welcome to bring their children to the event, as the day includes education, Wii games and a children’s art calendar competition.

Estate tax and elder law update– Ann-Margaret Carrozza, an elder law attorney and former member of the New York State Assembly for 14 years, is hosting a free estate tax and elder law update.

It will take place on Monday, June 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Douglaston-Little Neck Community Library, located at 249-01 Northern Boulevard.

“Participants at this event will learn what they need to know about the recent estate tax changes,” said Carrozza. “The program will also focus on how to manage a loved one’s assets when they are no longer capable, how to protect one’s home and other assets when a loved one needs long-term care, estate planning – what happens when the ‘well’ spouse dies first and other estate planning issues.”

Public Advocate at Democratic Club– Public Advocate Bill de Blasio will be the guest speaker at the Jefferson Democratic Club on June 9 at 7:30 p.m.

The meeting will be held at the Clearview Golf Course Clubhouse at 202-12 Willets Point Boulevard across from Valentino’s on the Green.

Queens County Bird Club– The Queens County Bird Club will be meeting on June 15 at 8 p.m. at the Alley Pond Environmental Center.

DOUGLASTON

This meeting is the traditional “Kodachrome” night, where members can showcase their photography skills and talk about their birding experiences.

The environmental center is located at 228-06 Northern Boulevard.

Call to Honor Park Activist– The Rego-Forest Preservation Council is appealing to Community Board 11 to name the parkland at 243rd Street and Douglaston Parkway in honor of the late Joseph Hellmann.

Hellman fought to stop a proposed apartment building from taking over the lot that eventually became the parkland.
