Ivy Leaguer helps students beat the SATs

High school is about dating the hottest girl in school, hanging out with the most popular and throwing spit balls at the chalkboard. But it is also about earning the best grades possible, making sure teacher recommendations are in place to decorate that well-rounded college application and scoring as high as possible in the abhorred Scholastic Aptitude Tests or SATs.

April Lee, a junior at Princeton University, aims to help students in Queens achieve the latter through the Revolutionary Prep’s Ivy Insiders SAT tutoring program. The test preparation initiative boasts individualized instruction, hands-on training with proven strategies by students currently attending Ivy League universities.

The three-week long program consists of three hour sessions, held twice a week, each covering a different topic within the critical reading, math and writing sections.

“I want to help my students as much as possible,” said Lee. “There’s always a simple way to solve a problem and I use video game examples because it’s something that students connect to I get students really well in the process, and that’s great.”

Lee, who is double majoring in neuroscience and art and archaeology, also said that she teams up her students in small groups that way the students get personalized tutoring from her and learn from other students as well. The key thing to remember according to Lee is “you just need to know the general shortcuts and you’ll get through it, without getting overwhelmed by it.”

The test prep has helped at least 10,000 students raise their SAT scores by 300 points. The mission of the program is to provide students with the strategies to master the three hour 45 minute exam with quality instructors regardless of their ability to pay for the program.

“The Ivy Insiders program offers SAT prep throughout the year with tutors that really want their students to succeed and the good part is that we don’t turn a student away because they can pay for the prep,” Lee said. “We have scholarships available for them.”

Registration for the program is ongoing. Lee will conduct the SAT prep through Ivy Insiders in August. Those that participate in the summer program will also be able to take a free refresher course before they take their exam.
