The New York Mets are calling out to fans to visit Citi Field.
Mets players will be personally contacting fans of the team via telephone throughout the remainder of the season as part of the New York Mets Amazin’ Calls program, which is presented by Verizon.
Every Met will call a deserving person and invite them to a weekend game at Citi Field. The lucky fan will then have the privilege of joining their famous caller on the field prior to the game, sitting next to the Mets’ dugout during the contest and seeing their name on the scoreboard.
The Mets will host an Amazin’ Call guest before every remaining weekend game this season.
The first call of the season was placed on August 18, when relief pitcher Tim Byrdak contacted Thomas Heaney, a program participant at Queens Centers for Progress (QCP), formerly United Cerebral Palsy of Queens.
Heaney stood on the field with Byrdak and 1969 Mets World Series champion Ed Charles, who is well acquainted with Heaney from his visits to the QCP Center, before the game against the Milwaukee Brewers on August 20.
Heaney, who suffers from intellectual disabilities and mild seizures, contributes his time to a variety of community services, including volunteering at senior centers. He has been a member of QCP, which provides services for children and adults in Queens County who have Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities, for seventeen years.
“It was a heartwarming day,” said Maryann McAleer, QCP’s director of development. “Thomas Heaney was treated royally. Thomas is a Met fan, and this was such a special day for him and his family. He smiled from ear to ear all day long.
It is very important to QCP to see our program participants recognized in this way. It was an honor for Thomas and our agency. This particular event improved the quality of Thomas’ life, even if it was for one day. He felt terribly important, and he is very important.”
