I am writing to thank state Sen. Tony Avella (D-Bayside) for his efforts to get a traffic light installed in College Point at 122nd Street and 11th Avenue (“Traffic light coming to dangerous College Pt. corner,” July 21-27).
As a lifelong College Pointer who can see this “heavily trafficked intersection” from his front yard, I understand how important this traffic light is. Thanks to this light, there will now be unnecessary traffic backup on residential 11th Avenue. Thanks to this light and Avella, we will not have to wait a second or two for a car to pass through the intersection before it is your turn to go. Thanks to this light and the bus stop just beyond it, we can expect a backup where there never was one before.
Eight out of 10 times you reach this intersection there is no traffic at all, but thanks to Avella’s efforts, now there will be. Thank you on behalf of the four or five people per hour who cross the street here and thank you for directing unnecessary resources to a residential intersection that did not have a problem.
I cannot wait for next year’s “civic action checklist” when I will ask you to remove the traffic light. I hope you are just as willing to remedy my inconvenience.
