Editor’s note: The following letter was originally sent to City Council Member James F. Gennaro. Dear Councilman Gennaro:
On behalf of the Queens Chamber of Commerce and our 1,200 member businesses and business organizations, we write in support of Intro 490-A. Our thanks go out to you for authoring and sponsoring this most reasonable piece of legislation that addresses a true hardship and nuisance to our small business communeed nity.
Overzealous parking agents and ticketing authorities don’t fully understand the effects their decisions have on small business. Nothing will drive away a customer faster than an unjust ticket. Allowing a ticket to be canceled upon the showing of a valid receipt no later than five minutes after the issuance of the ticket is both fair and reasonable.
Before the introduction of this law, even people attempting to comply with the law were penalized. Small business owners have enough to contend with in today’s economy. Scaring consumers from metered spots certainly didn’t help; your new law will.
Again let me extend our thanks to you and Speaker Quinn for this great new policy. You have always been supportive and understanding of our member’s concerns and we do appreciate it.
Jack Friedman
