Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni resigns

Mike D’Antoni is saying goodbye to the Garden.

According to published reports, D’Antoni resigned as coach of the New York Knicks early Wednesday afternoon. His departure comes amid a turbulent six-game losing streak that has led to speculation about D’Antoni’s control over the locker room.

The Knicks (18-24) had reportedly begun to tune out their coach, and star forward Carmelo Anthony was allegedly uncomfortable in the offensive system being run by the team.

D’Antoni was 121-167 in three-and-a-half seasons in New York. He led the Knicks to their first playoff appearance in seven seasons last year, but failed to get out of the first round after being swept by the Boston Celtics.

Assistant Coach Mike Woodson is expected to take over for D’Antoni tonight against the Portland Trail Blazers.
