Newly sworn-in U.S. Rep. Grace Meng (D-Bayside) will serve on the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.

“I am privileged and honored to have been awarded a spot on one of the most important and influential committees in the House of Representatives,” Meng said. “For most members of Congress, foreign affairs is an international subject. But here in Queens, foreign affairs is a local issue. The borough is a snapshot of the world …. I look forward to tackling the many international issues important to the people of Queens, including further strengthening our relationship with vital U.S. allies Israel, South Korea and India.”

The panel is responsible for oversight and legislation related to the U.S. State and Defense departments, foreign aid, peacekeeping missions and arms control, according to the House website. The committee basically helps determine America’s foreign policy toward nations around the world, according to Meng’s office.

Meng was appointed to the Foreign Affairs Committee by the House Democratic Caucus, according to her office, while subcommittee assignments were expected this week.

Meng was appointed to the House Small Business Committee last month, according to her office.
