Helped Attack Victim Near Projects

Detectives in Brooklyn arrested a second suspect last Thursday, Feb. 21, in the deadly stabbing of a 39-year-old man outside the Cooper Park housing project in East Williamsburg earlier this month, law enforcement sources stated.

Raphael Vargas, 44, of Nostrand Avenue in Clinton Hill was picked up by members of the 94th Precinct Detective Squad for his alleged role in the death of Anthony Dash, 39, on the night of Feb. 1.

Four days after the incident, law enforcement agents arrested Richie Vargas, 21, of Morgan Avenue in East Williamsburg on charges of manslaughter, first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon for the incident.

The nature of the relationship between the co-defendants was not disclosed by police.

According to authorities, the stabbing took place at around 9 p.m. on Feb. 1 in front of an apartment house in the housing complex located on Jackson Street between Kingsland and Debevoise avenues.

In responding to a 911 call about the incident, officers from the 94th Precinct found Dash-a resident of the Cooper Park projects who lived on Frost Street-with a stab wound to his left leg. EMS units responded to the location and rushed Dash to Woodhull Hospital Center in critical but stable condition. Two days later, Dash died from his injuries.

Raphael Vargas was arraigned in Kings County Criminal Court last Friday, Feb. 22, on charges of firstdegree assault, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. He was ordered held without bail.
