Throughout the Christian season of Lent, sixth-graders at St. Pancras School in Glendale took up a collection to benefit the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. As noted, many of the youngsters gave up eating sweets over the 40 days of Lent and contributed the money they would have otherwise spent on the treats to the donation drive. The effort was organized in part by their teacher, Walter Stark, a former patient at Sloan Kettering. He praised his youngsters for their generosity and work to help the hospital in its efforts to treat and cure cancer.
