Decapitated on the Tracks

Train Runs Over Suicidal Man In Ridgewood

Service on the M line in Ridgewood was suspended for over two hours last Friday night, May 31, after a gruesome suicide in which a man laid down on the tracks and was decapitated by an oncoming train, police reported.

The identity of the 45-year-old Hispanic male was not disclosed by law enforcement sources pending family notification.

Reportedly, the incident took place at around 9:20 p.m. near the Seneca Avenue M train station, located above the intersection of Seneca Avenue and Palmetto Street.

According to information obtained by police, the man laid himself onto the Middle Village-bound M line tracks about 200 feet west of the station moments before a train approached.

Law enforcement sources said the motorman operating the Middle Village-bound train saw the man on the tracks and hit the emergency brake.

However, police noted, the train was not able to come to a stop before hitting the man. Authorities said the wheels of the train decapitated the man, whose head fell between the tracks and landed on the pavement below.

Officers from the 104th Precinct, the NYPD Transit Bureau and EMS units rushed to the location. Train service was suspended on the M line between Metropolitan Avenue and Myrtle Avenue-Braodway for 2 1/2 hours as police canvassed the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, law enforcement sources said.
