Corona Man Dies In So. Jam. Accident

Speeding Car Hit Pole, Tree On Pkwy. Ramp

Trying to make a pass on a South Jamaica roadway proved fatal for a driver from Corona and a passenger after their vehicle crashed on a Belt Parkway entrance ramp last Thursday night, Sept. 18, police reported.

Law enforcement sources said the driver-20-year-old D’John Arias of Junction Boulevard- and a passenger identified as 19-year-old Karim Carter of Anderson Road in South Jamaica died after sustaining severe body trauma.

A third passenger, a 14-yearold boy, sustained leg injuries that were not life-threatening, authorities stated.

Reportedly, the deadly crash occurred at 10:45 p.m. last Thursday on the entrance ramp to the westbound Belt Parkway near 181st Street.

According to information obtained by police, Arias was behind the wheel of a 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on North Conduit Avenue.

Police said Carter rode in the front passenger seat, while the 14-year-old victim was in the rear.

Approaching the entrance ramp, law enforcement sources said, Arias-who was driving in the left lane-swerved to the right to get around a vehicle ahead of him. Once he passed the other vehicle, he reportedly swerved back to the left and onto the ramp.

Seconds later, police noted, Arias lost control of the vehicle, which swerved onto a grassy shoulder and struck a nearby street lamp and tree.

Members of the 113th Precinct and the NYPD Highway Patrol responded to the location along with EMS units. Paramedics pronounced Arias dead at the scene.

Carter died after EMS units transported him to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. The 14- year-old boy was listed in stable condition at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.

An inquiry by the NYPD Collision Investigation Squad remains ongoing, police said.
