Bomb Scare at M.v. Facility

As the Times Newsweekly went to press Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 23, police were reportedly investigating a bomb scare at the Corrections Department training facility in Middle Village.

Metropolitan Avenue at 65th Place in Middle Village was closed Tuesday afternoon, due to a bomb scare at the Corrections Department’s training facility at Rentar Plaza.

Law enforcement sources said said the threat was phoned in sometime before 3 p.m. at the New York City Correction Academy located at 66-26 Metropolitan Ave. in Middle Village.

The entire building, which houses the Correctional Facility, Toys R Us, Kmart and other offices-and the Metro Mall shopping center below-was completely evacuated, sources said.

Traffic on Metropolitan Avenue was disrupted in both directions from 69th Street to Mount Olivet Crescent. Various police units, including the 104th and 112th Precincts, responded to the scene.

Capt. Judith Harrison, commanding officer of the 112th Precinct in Forest Hills, was on the scene. She told the Times Newsweekly the NYPD Emergency Services Unit (ESU) and the Corrections Department ESU were canvassing the building for potential threats.

“They’re going door-by-door, room-by-room and floor-byfloor. Then, we’ll make an assessment as to whether or not we’re going to have the Bomb Squad respond,” Harrison said.
