Jean Nidetch, the founder of Weight Watchers International Inc., died in her Florida home Wednesday at the age of 91, according to the company.

The origin of the weight loss company, which claims to have inspired millions around the world to achieve healthier lifestyles, dates back to 1963, when Nidetch started organizing group meetings for her overweight friends in her Little Neck living room.

“It’s choice – not chance – that determines your destiny” was Nidetch’s philosophy. She is survived by her son, David Nidetch and three grandchildren.
