West Nile Virus spraying to take place in Queens Wednesday

By Madina Toure

The city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will be spraying pesticide from trucks in parts of Queens overnight Wednesday between 8:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. to reduce mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile virus.

The spraying was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was rescheduled due to the rainy weather.

The Health Department is going to be treating parts of Auburndale, Corona, Flushing, Fresh Meadows, Kew Gardens Hills, Murray Hill, Pomonok, Queensboro Hill and Utopia, covering parts of the zip codes 11355, 11358, 11365 and 11367.

The department is also treating parts of Bellaire, Bellerose, Douglaston, Floral Park, Floral Park Center, Glen Oaks, Hollis Hills, Little Neck and Oakland Gardens, focusing on the zip codes 11001, 11004, 11005, 11361, 11362, 11364, 11426 and 11427.

The neighborhoods are being treated due to increasing West Nile virus activity and because they have high mosquito populations. No human cases have been reported this season.

The spraying involves applying a liquid insecticide from trucks to kill adult mosquitoes, which can be done in residential or non-residential areas. The department will be using a very low concentration of Anvil 10+10, a synthetic pesticide.
