Woodside shopkeeper beaten with metal pipe

By Bill Parry

Blood stains marked the spot where a 35-year-old shopkeeper in Woodside was brutally beaten early Saturday morning.

Martin Quiej, the owner of Tauros Party Supplies on 54th Street, ran out of his store around 1:45 a.m. to break up a verbal altercation between an employee and another man, according to the NYPD. Quiej was attacked by two suspects and beaten about the head and torso with a metal pipe, investigators said.

A 21-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene and the pipe was recovered, police said. Criminal charges were pending, according to the NYPD.

Police from the 108th Precinct were searching for a second suspect.

Quiej, a married father of two, was said to be in critical condition in Elmhurst Hospital Center.
