Derailed maintenance car on Woodside LIRR causes massive delays

Several trains on the Long Island Rail Road were diverted or canceled this morning after a track maintenance car in Woodside derailed.

The non-passenger maintenance train derailed at about 11 p.m. on Sunday, which caused delays and some westbound trains to be canceled or diverted to Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn and Hunterspoint Avenue in Long Island City.

A spokesperson for the Long Island Rail Road said 15 trains on the Babylon, Hempstead, Huntington/Port Jefferson, Long Beach and Ronkonkoma Branch were affected. According to the agency’s Twitter account, trains arrived to Penn Station 30 to 50 minutes later than scheduled.

The spokesperson added that the car has been removed from the tracks and that a crew is now working to repair damaged tracks due to the derailment. The agency will release an advisory later this afternoon with afternoon schedules, he said.

There were no injuries after the car derailed during scheduled maintenance.
